Running Tracks: “Revelation” by Third Day

This is a great song to listen to as you beat the pavement. It talks about how God can guide you through times of uncertainty. Mac Powell, lead singer for Third Day recently explained the song in an interview with Kevin Davis, Behind the Song. “‘Revelation’ is evidence that we didn’t want to settle with this record. When we recorded the album, we had plenty of songs to make the album, but we knew that we still wanted a couple more ideas. ‘Revelation’ was one of those prayer songs that I had written. A lot of people see the title of it and assume they know what it’s about, but it’s not really having to do with finding a revelation as with needing one. I’m really praying ‘God, I’m at this crossroad in my life and I genuinely don’t know what to do.’ It’s asking God to give guidance in that time of question.”

Day 13: Are You Wearing the Right Shoes?

How long can anyone run a hard and strong road without a decent pair of shoes? Not far if they are not wearing the right shoes.

There is nothing worse than dealing with discomfort when you’re running. You know those days when you are in the middle of a long run and you’re forced to stop because of pain or numbness in your foot? Some days can be worse than others, some can happen 4 miles into a run and others could occur during longer distances. No matter when it occurs, it can alter your performance.

I have worn the same brand and style running shoe for the last three years. When they get holes in the mesh and worn on the soles, I toss them out and buy the newer model. In my mind, I had the perfect shoe for my feet. After running longer distances, I started experiencing discomfort. I tried shoe lacing techniques, benefits of non-friction socks and even concentrated on my foot strike. It wasn’t until after I purchased my new treads that I discovered I wasn’t wearing the right shoes. As silly as it sounds, I didn’t realize what an impact my foot shape had on running. Turns out, HUGE! The right shoe for you can really make a big difference in the way you run and ultimately your speed and distance. The shoes I was wearing was making me weak and slowing down my performance. The Solution: get properly fitted for the right shoe.

On the contrary, as Christians, we need to make sure we are wearing the right shoes that are able to speed us on as we share the good news of peace with God.

Ephesians 6:15 says, “And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.”

Now can you imagine a Roman soldier out on the battle field in briars and sharp rocks with nothing to protect his feet? Of course they had to be protected, otherwise he would have been powerless against the enemy. No soldier can go far without the proper shoes. Even with all his other weapons, a barefoot soldier would soon become immobilized by the rough terrain (yes, even Cody Lundin). During the Bible times, the breaking of a soldier’s shoes was a metaphor for weakness or defeat, signifying that soldier’s effectiveness was largely dependent on his shoes. Isaiah 5:27 reads, “Not one of them grows tired or stumbles, not one slumbers or sleeps; not a belt is loosened at the waist, not a sandal thong is broken.”

A Roman soldier’s sandals were constructed of leather and laced up the center of the foot and on the ankle. When you look closely, this kind of footwear may not appear to provide very much protection, but the design was functional. The openness of the sandals enabled the soldier to wear them all day while he worked, in marching, in fighting, and in standing for long periods of time without getting blisters. The thick soles of the sandals were studded through with iron hobnails (nails inserted into the soles). These provided good traction and came in handy when trampling the enemy.

We, too, must have our feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of peace. Paul is telling believers that having our feet shod will keep us from slipping and falling, regardless of the surface we are walking on. And with one stomp of the shoes of the gospel will stop the enemy in his tracks. Cool huh?

Good shoes help in any endeavor including our race. So don’t wait! Get the right shoes for your feet now. They deserve it!
