Day 11: The Runner’s Stretch

I love a good stretch after a nice workout or warm up run. In fact, my running partner and I will stretch right after a warm up and stretch again after our run. One of my favorite stretches is when you hug your knee to your chest and twist your body. Holding that stretch for a few seconds is almost bliss!

Why is it when God stretches us, we don’t see or feel those wonderful seconds of bliss? Instead, we see God stretching us as hard and painful.

This year He has helped me see the wonderful seconds of bliss; and truthfully, I’ve seen more beauty in those few seconds. I have learned to accept the growing, the shedding and all that is to come. I have learned also that God will not let you be stretched beyond your strength. Our single task in life is to trust Him. Trust that He will make you stronger that you are presently. Trust that He knows what life lies ahead for you. Trust that He will enable you to endure the strain you presently feel. We must trust God knows your limit and your purpose.

When my husband and I both lost our job after my youngest son was born, it was one of the greatest tests I have faced. It stretched me beyond my limit. I want you to know that the truth I have learned and been taught about God over many years was confirmed in this experience. Without any shallow triumphalism, but with a quiet confidence I can affirm God enabled me to endure. He was faithful. I was able to bear the test. You can bear yours also.

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:3, “No test has overtaken you that is not common to all people. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the test will provide a way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

Our God is bigger. Your life is bigger. God has bigger plans than you think He does for you. There is this big life He has waiting for you. The question is, are you going to allow the stretching? It is hard. You are going to want to give up and quit. He is going to ask you to do things you don’t think you can possibly do. He is going to ask you to give up things you don’t think you can possibly give up, but at the end of that stretch are those wonderful moments of bliss. The life you and He have imagined. It is in the stretching we decide if we want to go after that life or continue with the one we have.
